Peter Figueroa, chief, Epidemiology and AIDS, Ministry of Health, Jamaica, is an Honorary Professor at The University of the West Indies (UWI), Honorary Research Fellow at the UWI Tropical Medicine Research Institute, Scientific Secretary of the Caribbean Health Research Council and Director of the Epidemiology and Research Training Unit. Peter Figueroa graduated from UWI with a BSc (Hons) degree in Physiology in 1969, an MBBS in 1972, and a Diploma in Public Health with Distinction in 1975. In 1981, he completed a Certificate in General Management and in 1996, was awarded the PHD from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In Jamaica Peter Figueroa has served as Senior Medical Officer (Health) Kingston and St. Andrew from 1979-1985, Principal Medical Officer (Epidemiology) 1986-1997, responsible for the National HIV/STI Control Programme and Chief Medical Officer, Ministry of Health, 1997-2002. He has represented the Government of Jamaica on regional and international health-related agencies. He is a member of several International Committees and Boards and Consultant to WHO and PAHO. His publications include over ninety (90) peer reviewed papers, three (3) jointly edited books and numerous papers and abstracts.
